Thewa and Pearls – An Unbeatable Combination
Pearl and Thewa Jewellery - Rajasthani Design

Indian Jewellery has inspired many designers across the world. Though over the years, it has evolved and transformed, many traditional jewellery designs have not lost their charm. One such art form is Thewa.

Thewa is an ancient jewellery craft that evolved about 300 years ago during the Mughal era. This beautiful and unique form of art involves embossing intricate fine designs in gold on a sheet of glass.  For several years this craft remained a closely guarded family secret and was monopolized by its inventor – Nathulal Sonewal – and his family. In fact, even today, Pratapgarh (in Rajasthan) is the only place where Thewa art is practised and manufactured. However, it has been mastered by several jewellers.

Thewa – The Royal Jewellery

Thewa jewellery became so popular that it was adorned by kings, queens, princes and princesses. Even the British women in India were enchanted by its beauty and couldn’t resist buying them! Soon its popularity spread outside the Indian borders and found its way to the European markets. Interestingly, even Queen Elizabeth is known to have a personal collection of thewa jewellery in her kitty.

Patterns and Motifs

Conventional Thewa patterns are traditional depicting the culture, heritage and tales of valour and romance of Rajashtan. Some of the typical themes are floral patterns, historical court scenes, battle scenes, portraits of queens and Hindu mythological characters – the most popular being Krishna Leelas. However, in recent times, designers have tried to give it a more contemporary look by introducing geometric patterns and styling it with beads and other fashionable elements.
