Citrine
The yellow to orange variety of quartz. Most of it is heat-treated amethyst, and it is often mis-sold as yellow sapphire.
Natural citrine is uncommon. The great majority on the market is amethyst heated until it turns yellow, which is a stable and accepted treatment.
Colour runs from pale lemon to a deep madeira brown-orange.
In astrology it is recommended as an affordable substitute for yellow sapphire, which is honest when stated and dishonest when not.
When you are buying
If you are told citrine is yellow sapphire, walk away. If you are told it is a citrine substitute for pukhraj, that is a fair and normal offer.

Yellow Sapphire
Yellow corundum. Pukhraj in Hindi, the stone of Jupiter, and the most commonly prescribed astrological gem in India.
Quartz
The most common gem mineral, covering amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz and clear rock crystal.
Topaz
A hard silicate gem, most often seen as blue topaz. Frequently confused with, and substituted for, yellow sapphire.
