Coral

Metals & StonesAlso called moonga, red coral, coral beads

A red to orange organic gem formed from marine coral skeleton. Paired with pearls in traditional Indian sets, and worn as moonga in astrology.

Coral is organic, like pearl, and similarly soft. It is porous, so it stains and can be bleached by acids and cosmetics.

Most coral in jewellery is dyed or stabilised. Undyed natural red coral of good colour is scarce and expensive.

In Vedic astrology red coral is the stone of Mars, worn as moonga, which is why it appears so often in Indian jewellery independent of fashion.

When you are buying

Coral and pearl need identical care: no perfume, no ultrasonic cleaner, no acids. A set combining both is a set you must always put on last.
