Exotic Pearl Colours

Types of PearlAlso called fancy colour pearls, coloured pearls, colour pearls

Pearls outside the white and cream range — pink, peach, lavender, grey, golden, blue, green and multi-shaded strands.

Freshwater mussels naturally produce soft pinks, peaches, lavenders and creams. These are body colours, present from growth, and they vary gently along a strand.

Stronger colours such as deep blue, green, chocolate and jet black are almost always the result of dye or irradiation.

Multi-shaded strands, where each pearl differs slightly from its neighbour, are graded on how deliberately the gradation runs rather than on how closely matched the pearls are.

When you are buying

Coloured pearls are the easiest way to make pearl jewellery look modern instead of inherited. A lavender or peach strand reads far younger than plain white at the same price.
