Thewa

Jewellery StylesAlso called thewa work, thewa art

A Rajasthani craft that fuses pierced sheet gold onto coloured glass, producing a stained-glass effect.

Thewa comes from Pratapgarh in Rajasthan and has been made by a single family lineage for around three centuries.

An intricate scene is cut from a sheet of high-purity gold and fused onto molten coloured glass, so light passes through the glass behind the goldwork.

Each piece is made by hand and the designs are usually figurative: court scenes, hunts, deities, florals.

When you are buying

Thewa is a craft purchase, not a gold-weight purchase. Value it on the fineness of the piercing and the story in the panel, and expect to pay for the labour rather than the metal.
