Pearl Care

Caring for Your Pearls

A pearl is the only gem born from a living creature — organic, soft, and quietly alive. With a little everyday care, your Pure Pearls will keep their warm lustre for generations. Here is everything you need to know.

The golden rule

Last on, first off. Put your pearls on afteryour make-up, perfume, and hairspray — and take them off before you undress, shower, or sleep. This one habit prevents the vast majority of pearl damage.

Everyday wear

  • Wipe each piece with a soft, dry (or very lightly damp) cloth after wearing, to lift away skin oils and perspiration.
  • Wear them often — a pearl’s lustre actually benefits from contact with your skin’s natural moisture.
  • Put jewellery on last when dressing, and fasten clasps gently rather than tugging the strand.

What to avoid

  • Perfume, hairspray, deodorant, and cosmetics — apply these first and let them dry before putting your pearls on.
  • Household chemicals, chlorine, and salt water — remove pearls before cleaning, swimming, or bathing.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners, steamers, and commercial jewellery dips — they are far too harsh for delicate nacre.
  • Storing pearls loose with harder gemstones or metal that can scratch their surface.

Cleaning

For routine care, a soft microfibre or lint-free cloth is all you need — wipe gently after each wear. For a deeper clean, dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and a single drop of mild, non-detergent soap, wipe each pearl, then lay the piece flat on a soft towel to dry completely before storing. Never soak a strung strand — water weakens the silk thread inside.

Storing

  • Keep pearls in the soft pouch or box they arrived in, away from harder jewellery.
  • Store strands flat rather than hanging, so they don’t stretch over time.
  • Avoid long spells in air-tight bags or safes — pearls hold a little moisture and can dry out in very dry air. A breathable pouch is ideal.

Restringing

If you wear a pearl strand often, have it restrung every year or two. Over time the silk can stretch and weaken; restringing — ideally knotted between each pearl — keeps your pearls secure and beautifully draped. We are happy to advise; just reach out.

A note on your Pure Pearls

Every piece is genuine, hand-selected pearl. Treated kindly, real pearls only grow more beautiful with wear, taking on a soft glow that imitation pearls never will. They are made to be worn, loved, and one day passed on.
