Anklet
A chain worn around the ankle, called payal in the north and kolusu in the south.
Anklets are traditionally silver rather than gold, following a long-standing convention that gold is not worn below the waist.
Many carry small bells, so the piece is heard as well as seen.
Pearl anklets are a modern variation and need a robust chain, since an anklet takes more knocks than any other piece of jewellery.
When you are buying
Buy an anklet a little loose. One that fits snugly will rub against the ankle bone and wear through at that single point.
