Panchdhatu
An alloy of five metals, traditionally gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron, used for astrological rings.
Panchdhatu means five metals. Panchaloha is the South Indian equivalent, used for temple bronzes as well as jewellery.
Proportions vary between makers, and most commercial panchdhatu contains only a token amount of gold.
It is chosen for astrological rings because each metal is associated with a planet, so the alloy is held to suit any wearer.
When you are buying
Panchdhatu cannot be hallmarked, because it is not a defined precious metal standard. Price it as an alloy and buy it for the tradition rather than as gold content.
Navratna
A setting of nine gemstones, one for each of the nine planets in Vedic astrology, arranged in a fixed order.
Moti
The Hindi word for pearl, and in Vedic astrology the gemstone of the Moon, worn to strengthen Chandra.
Hallmark
An official stamp certifying precious metal purity. In India, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery.
Brass
A copper and zinc alloy with a warm gold tone. Strong and inexpensive, but it tarnishes and can react with skin.
