Toggle Clasp
A bar that drops through a ring and lies across it. Easy to fasten one-handed, and only as secure as the tension holding it.
The bar must be longer than the ring's inner diameter, and the piece must be under slight tension to keep the bar seated.
It is the easiest clasp to manage one-handed, which makes it a genuine accessibility choice.
On a loose or very light necklace the bar can work its way out, so it suits pieces with some weight.
When you are buying
Fine for a bracelet or a necklace with a bit of drape. A poor choice for anything light enough to sit slack at the back of the neck.
Clasp
The fastening that closes a necklace or bracelet. The most common point of failure and the most overlooked part of a purchase.
Lobster Clasp
A spring-loaded hook shaped like a lobster claw. The most secure everyday clasp and the modern default.
Box Clasp
A folded metal tongue that clicks into a box. The traditional fine-jewellery clasp, usually with a safety catch.
Magnetic Clasp
Two magnets that snap together. The easiest clasp to use and the least secure.
