Tola
A traditional South Asian weight, about 11.66 grams. Still used in conversation, rarely on the bill.
One tola is 11.6638 grams, standardised historically against the old silver rupee coin.
Formal billing uses grams, but older buyers and family conversation still measure gold in tolas.
Ten grams is often loosely called a tola, which it is not. The gap is more than a gram and a half.
When you are buying
If someone quotes you in tolas, convert to grams before comparing anything. Treating a tola as ten grams understates the weight by about 14%.
Gold Rate
The day's price of gold per gram at a stated purity. The base every gold bill is built on.
Momme
A Japanese unit of weight used in the pearl trade, equal to 3.75 grams. Used wholesale, rarely at retail.
Carat
A unit of gemstone weight, equal to 0.2 grams. Nothing to do with karat, which measures gold purity.
